Many mums become experts at caring for everyone else whilst neglecting their own needs.

The reality is that parenting is exhausting.

Add financial pressures, relationship responsibilities, household tasks, interrupted sleep and work commitments, and it's easy to see why so many mothers feel overwhelmed.

Burnout is not failure.

Burnout is often a sign that you've been carrying too much for too long.

What Burnout Can Look Like

It doesn't always appear as complete exhaustion.

Sometimes it looks like:

  • Constant irritability
  • Crying more frequently
  • Feeling emotionally numb
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Losing enjoyment in things you once loved
  • Feeling guilty all the time
  • Resenting responsibilities
  • Struggling to switch off

Why So Many Mums Struggle in Silence

Many mothers feel pressure to be:

  • Patient
  • Organised
  • Positive
  • Productive
  • Grateful

All at the same time.

Social media can make these pressures worse.

We often see carefully curated moments rather than real life.

Behind many perfect photos are very real struggles.

Warning Signs It's Time to Ask for Help

Consider speaking to someone if:

  • You're struggling to function day-to-day.
  • Anxiety is becoming overwhelming.
  • You feel persistently low.
  • You are finding it difficult to bond with your baby.
  • You're withdrawing from friends and family.

Seeking support early can make a huge difference.

Practical Ways to Reduce Burnout

Lower the Bar

Not every day needs to be productive.

Some days the goal is simply getting through.

Accept Help

If someone offers support:

  • Say yes.
  • Let them bring a meal.
  • Let them help with childcare.
  • Let them help with household tasks.

Protect Small Moments

Even ten minutes can help.

  • Read a book.
  • Drink a hot coffee.
  • Go for a walk.
  • Listen to music.

Remember

Your child does not need a perfect parent.

Your child needs a cared-for parent.
