Why Volunteers Matter

Volunteers play a vital role in helping us respond quickly to need from preparing and distributing baby essentials to supporting behind‑the‑scenes operations that keep our services running.

With rising living costs and increasing demand for support, volunteers help ensure families receive help at the earliest point, before pressure escalates into crisis.

To date, Basch Helps has supported over 10,000 newborns and toddlers across London — impact made possible by the dedication of volunteers alongside partners and supporters.

Keeping Everyone Safe

Vetting

We work alongside babies, parents, and families during some of the most sensitive and challenging moments of their lives. Keeping everyone safe — families, volunteers, and our community — is at the heart of everything we do.

Our vetting process is designed to be caring, respectful, and proportionate. For certain volunteer roles, particularly those involving direct contact with parents and children, additional checks such as a DBS are required.

This helps ensure families can place their trust in us, and that volunteers feel confident, supported, and protected in their role.

We’ll always explain what’s needed and why, and our team is here to guide you through the process every step of the way.

Training & Skills Building

We believe volunteering should feel empowering as well as meaningful.

All volunteers receive appropriate training and guidance for their role. For some roles, this includes mandatory training such as safeguarding, mental health awareness, first aid basics, understanding professional boundaries, and knowing how to raise concerns or signpost families to further support.

Many volunteers tell us they value the confidence, skills, and experience they gain — skills that often stay with them well beyond their time volunteering.

AngelBox deliveries are at the heart of what we do — and no two are ever the same.

All volunteers are supported with clear guidance, appropriate boundaries, and safeguarding processes.

For certain volunteer roles that involve direct contact with parents and children, a full DBS check is required, and volunteers will take part in mandatory, comprehensive training before starting their role.

This training includes:

Understanding safeguarding responsibilities and how to report concerns
Mental health awareness, including recognising signs of distress
Basic first aid awareness
Guidance on professional boundaries and appropriate conduct
Signposting and referral awareness, so volunteers know how to guide families to further support

Volunteering at Basch Helps CIC is physically demanding.

There's always lots of calls and admin to help with if your applying for an office based role. But on days were demand is high for AngelBox distribution you may be required to join delivery team as that's our priority.

Warehouse volunteers have a physically demanding role they have to store deliveries on the appropriate shelves, storage bins and will be required to understand our delivery system and continually pack heavy emergency relief packages.

Each AngelBox weighs on average 20kg once assembled and this excludes additional equipment, frequently as a delivery volunteer you may be required to carry an AngelBox up tight staircases because the communal lift isn't working.

So it's our duty to make sure everyone applying is physically capable of the required role their applying for.
